  1. Showgif - Windows Image Viewer and Catalog Manager
  2.  
  3. Showgif is a Microsoft Windows program that can view a variety of
  4. bitmapped graphics formats and also maintain multiple catalogs of images.
  5. Version 1.09 is being distributed free, as-is, by the author, 
  6. Allen C. Kempe.

  8. The graphics formats currently supported are:
  9.     LBM/CE - Computer Eyes IFF (read only)
  10.     TIFF -     Tag Image Format. Most formats including 24 bit color
  11.         are supported. 
  12.     PCX -     Microsoft Paint  (read only)
  13.     TGA -    Targa 
  14.     GIF -    Compuserve Graphics Interchange Format
  15.     BMP -    Windows Bitmap
  16.     RLE -    Windows Run Length Encoded

  18. Note: Not all variations that may be possible in the above file formats have
  19. been tested due to lack of suitable test files.

  21. One of the major features of Showgif is the ability to build catalogs of
  22. images, that may reside on different disks. The catalog can then be searched
  23. and images can be easily located. Provisions are made for saving a primary and
  24. backup location for the image concurrently. To enhance searching for a 
  25. particular image the program can display postage stamp images in a matrix.

  27. The ability to read an image in one format and to save it in another allows
  28. the program to be used as a file conversion utility.

  30. SHOWGIF version 1.09 is freeware although future versions of the program may
  31. not be. The author's interest in making the program available to the public is
  32. to obtain assistance in further development of the program. To this end,
  33. comments and suggestions as well as problem notification are requested from
  34. users.

  48. File Menu:
  49.     Open File - Open a new file for viewing.
  50.     Save File - Save an image, possibly in a different format.
  51.     Move/Copy file - Move or copy a file.
  52.     Delete - Delete a file.
  53.     Print - print all or part of an image.

  56. Catalog Menu:
  57.     New catalog: Create, delete, select or rename an image catalog.
  58.     Catalog. Create or update a catalog entry for a displayed image. 
  59.     Browse Catalog. View catalog entries one by one; select a subset
  60.                     for viewing.
  61.     Build Catalog. Create catalog entries for groups of images.
  62.     Rebuild Catalog Index. Recover lost space in file and compact it.

  64. Edit Menu:
  65.     Paste palette and image from clipboard.
  66.     Copy all or part of an image to the clipboard.
  67.     Cut a selected area from an image.
  68.     Crop an image.
  69.     Expand an image to fill the dimensions of the current window.

  71. Options:
  72.     Set backround color used when image is expanded.
  73.     Display DIB or Bitmap format.
  74.     Control whether warning messages will be displayed.

  76. View Options
  77.     Palette manipulation.
  78.     View slides of catalog entries.

  80. Other:
  81.     Using the mouse in the main viewing window, a rectangle can be
  82.     selected for copying or cutting to the clipboard. The right mouse 
  83.     button can be used to draw a stretch rectangle where the selected 
  84.     rectangle is copied.

  88. -    The catalog I/O routines  have been rewritten. As a result, the catalog
  89.     is now kept in alphabetical sequence.
  90. -   Many bugs have been corrected, especially memory and file handle
  91.     management. Showgif has been tested with additional file formats including
  92.     various TIFF & TARGA formats.
  93. -    GIF89a is now supported.
  94. -   Files can now be saved in PCX format in either compressed or uncompressed
  95.     format.
  96. -   Context sensitive help has been added. This includes links to error
  97.     messages.
  98. -   Confirmation messages are now provided before deleting a file and other
  99.     critical actions.
  100. -   The displayed catalog can now be searched for hits on keyword and format.
  101.     The search criteria can also include whether a backup copy exists.
  102. -   A new Icon is included through the gracious contribution of Paul Hachey,
  103.     76247,3716. The author would also like to recognize the contribution that
  104.     Paul has made as an "alpha" tester.
  105. -   A new "Undo" command allows the last edit command to be backed out.
  106. -   Warning is given before a modified image is overwritten or the program
  107.     is ended allowing the image to be saved.
